Material Memories

More-Than-Planet: Visions for a Life in a New Geological Epoch?
The “More-Than-Planet: Visions for a Life in a New Geological Epoch?” exhibition and its satellite events aim to contribute to the debate on whether or not to enter the new geological epoch of the Anthropocene, discussed this year by the International Commission on Stratigraphy of the International Union of Geological Sciences. The Anthropocene is characterized by the advent of humans as the main force of change on Earth, surpassing geophysical forces.
The geological reference point chosen to support the entry into this possible new era is Crawford Lake, in Ontario, Canada. Key markers for its onset include radionuclides traces from atomic tests, carbon particles from fossil fuels, as well as nitrates and fertilizers – all traces of human activities from the 1950s, detected in sediments at the bottom of the water column of the Lake Crawford. But the Anthropocene does not necessarily start with the so-called “Great Acceleration” that followed World War II. We can root the human impact at a geological level on our planetary system with the significant acceleration enabled by colonization from the 15th Century onwards.
A team of artists and researchers comes together for the exhibition, combining artistic and scientific methods to explore the significance of declaring the new geological epoch and to develop collective approaches to addressing the multiple crises characteristic of the Anthropocene. The exhibition presents interdisciplinary research results, art and science field notes, as well as art installations.

Ramin Haerizadeh, Rokni Haerizadeh, Hesam Rahmanian / (LA)HORDE Dance after the Revolution, from Tehran to L.A., and back / Bondy
Vom 5. April bis 20. Mai zeigen wir Bondy des französischen Kollektivs (LA)HORDE sowie Dance after the Revolution, from Tehran to L.A., and back der in Dubai lebenden iranischen Künstler Ramin Haerizadeh, Rokni Haerizadeh und Hesam Rahmanian.

Dance after the Revolution, from Tehran to L.A., and back, 2020, 36:30 min
Etage von Urs Fischer, Andreas Gursky, Laura Owens, Richard Prince, Jean-Frédéric Schnyder, Rosemarie Trockel u.a.
Die Auswahl der Werke wurde zusammengestellt von Beatrix Ruf, Kuratorin der Sammlung 1996 bis 2015 und Rahel Blättler, Sammlungsmanagerin und Kuratorin der Sammlung.

NAIRY BAGHRAMIAN
Modèle vivant (Se ployant)
With her solo exhibition at Hauser & Wirth in Zurich, Nairy Baghramian concludes her series ‘Modèle vivant,’ initially begun on the occasion of her exhibition at the Nasher Sculpture Center in Dallas TX in 2022. For this presentation, Baghramian will present eight new sculptures under the title ‘Modèle vivant (Se ployant).’ Making reference to the tradition of drawing, painting or sculpting from a live model, as indicated by the French term ‘modèle vivant’ in the series’ title, the Berlin-based artist’s abstract works, as per usual in her practice, grant only approximations and allusions of the human gestalt. Baghramian’s geometric shapes and organic forms, invariably made from cast aluminum and held or supported by armatures, hooks and rods, rather confront their beholders with subtle evocations of poses and postures, demeanors and dispositions. Placed at the margins or dangling from the ceiling of the exhibition space, these sculptures, as they appear to withdraw, stand up or recline (as in her 2023 outdoor work ‘S’adossant (Pauline),’ currently on view at MoMA in New York), poignantly evoke both the social strictures and potential mutability of embodiment, thereby offering striking allegories—or models—of contemporary subject positions.
Intensifying her preceding interrogation of the poetics and politics of representing and addressing the human figure, the syntax and placement of her new works—all of which conjure bent or bowed bodies (as suggested by the title addition ‘se ployant’)—starts from the double meaning of the term ‘mass.’ Aligning a central facet of any sculpture, ‘mass’ is palpable even when it is absent or negated. In this new body of work, the artist questions the pressures (figuratively or literally) exerted on the individual elements of any given group arrangement (be it social or artistic, or both). In this way, Baghramian’s abstract works intend to explore the interstices between conforming and retreating and the space of leeway they may offer for perception, critique and reflection.
Join us for the opening reception Saturday 7 June, 6 – 8 pm.

PHILIP GUSTON
Singularities
Opening during Zurich Art Weekend 2024, an exhibition of late figurative Philip Guston paintings dated between 1968 and 1979 will be on view at the gallery’s second floor Limmatstrasse space.
Join us for the opening reception Saturday 7 June, 6 – 8 pm.
Curated in collaboration with Musa Mayer, the artist’s daughter and president of The Guston Foundation, the exhibition explores the liberated motifs and instinctual forms that emerged in Guston’s late works, as they continued to evolve until his death in 1980. When the late work was first shown at the Marlborough Gallery in 1970, critics denounced Guston’s dramatic shift from abstraction toward dark, cartoon-like imagery. Today, the paintings of Guston’s last years are considered milestones of modern art. Well-known paintings will be featured alongside never-before exhibited works. This exhibition in Zurich follows the major retrospective ‘Philip Guston’ at the Tate Modern which closed in February 2024.

Performance “Liquid Connections” By Artist Lena Maria Thüring With Brandy Butler
Performance "Liquid Connections" by artist Lena Maria Thüring with Brandy Butler at 6.30PM followed by a discussion to attempt to collectively define words for a regenerative glossary on water. The artists explores the mutual relationships and connections between the element of water and the human body. Apéro will be served in collaboration with Edition VFO from 18:00 to 20:00.
Following the performance, there will be an interactive discussion to collectively define terms for the regenerative glossary.
Her most recent project, titled "Liquid Connections," unfolds across multiple exhibitions and encompasses the production of a film, as well as a spatial installation and a live performance. The project's inception lies in a dense, poetic text collage sourced from scientific literature, speculative fiction, and pop culture references. Within this collage, the artist explores the interconnectedness between water and the human body, delving into questions of origin and the existential threat posed by climate change.
In her text, the rising sea levels due to global warming are envisioned as a speculative return to water, contemplating the potential for human transformation into a "multispecies" entity better equipped to face future challenges.
Biography:
Lena Maria Thüring lives and works in Zurich and Basel. Thüring completed her studies in photography in 2007 and earned a Master of Arts in Fine Arts from the Zurich University of the Arts (ZHdK) in 2014. From 2014 to 2017, she served as a jury member of the Audiovision and Multimedia expert committee, BS/BL, Basel.

About Maya Minder and Ewen Chardronnet
Maya Minder (born 1983) lives and works in Zurich, Switzerland, and Paris, France. “Cooking thus transforms us,” is a framework Minder weaves like a thread through her work. For Minder, cooking serves as a metaphor for human transformation, and she combines this with the evolutionary idea of a symbiotic coexistence between plants, animals, and humans. She creates entanglements between human commodities and the animism of nature—a table of diversity, not yet digested.
Ewen Chardronnet (born 1971) is an artist, author, journalist and curator living and working in Paris and Zurich. In his work, he is interested in practices, tactics and speculations that connect artistic research and scientific knowledge to the creation of social situations that intertwine discourses and shifts of perspectives in the very fabric of society. His latest book is Space Without Rockets (with R. La Frenais, UV, 2022).
